Pop-up blockers

Pop-Up Blockers:

Do some things just not work on your computer. For an increasing number of facilities to work you might need to configure any software that prevents pop-up windows, often called Pop-Up, Window Killers or Ad Blockers. Pop-ups can be a nuisance but they are also useful when you want to access the many features offered by websites.

You might well have several of these installed. If you do, you will need to visit them all as any one could be responsible. When you are doing that you might think about rationalising your protection as you can get performance and more serious problems if the layers of protection conflict.

While you are doing this, check to see if you had Java enabled or disabled. many of the pop-ups are in fact Java scripts but the pop-up blockers know all about them.

Most pop-up blockers allow you to selectively authorise pop-ups from some sites or to disable their function altogether. In many cases there is more than one pop-up blocker installed on your computer. You will need to configure all of them. Instructions to change the common pop-up blockers are listed below.

	Google Toolbar
	Yahoo Toolbar
	Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SVP2)
	Norton Internet Security/Personal Firewall
	Firefox

Configuring the Google toolbar Pop-up Blocker

If you are using Internet Explorer with the Google toolbar, ensure that the Google Toolbar says ‘Site pop-ups allowed’ when you are on the webcasting lobby page. To accomplish this, go to the webcasting lobby page and click the button on the Google Toolbar that says ‘ # blocked’ (e.g., 132 blocked in the picture below). The button will turn into ‘Site pop-ups allowed’.

Make sure that before you hit the ‘Test Your System’ button or the ‘Attend …’ button the Google toolbar shows ‘Site pop-ups allowed’.

Configuring the Yahoo toolbar Pop-up Blocker

If you are using Internet Explorer with the Yahoo toolbar, click on the pop-up menu (below) and follow the instructions.

	Add the source of the pop-up window to your Allowed List by clicking the Pop-Up Blocker menu and selecting the ‘Always Allow Pop-Ups From....’ button.
	Then select the site from the ‘Sources of Recently Blocked Pop-Ups’ list and click ‘Allow’.

Configuring the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SVP2) Pop-up Blocker

	Open an Internet Explorer window
	Click ‘Tools’ (on the upper menu)
	Choose ‘Internet Options’
	Select the ‘Privacy’ tab
	Click the ‘Settings…’ button
	In the box for ‘Address for Web site to Allow’ type ‘writerspages.net’
	Click the ‘Add’ button
	Click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’

Now close out of Internet Explorer

Configuring the Norton Internet Security/Firewall Pop-up Blocker

	Open Norton Internet Security's main window or Start->Programs->Norton Firewall)
	Click the ‘Ad Blocking’ line
	Click the ‘Turn Off’ button
